Rome’s Trevi Fountain to Start Charging Tourist Fee
The Trevi Fountain in Rome which was made famous in the film “La Dolce Vita” is often packed with crowds including those who want to get close to the fountain basin to toss in a coin for good luck. As part of the efforts of Italy (and other countries) to control and prevent over tourism reportedly starting on February 1 of this year, there will be a tourist fee for foreign tourists to get up close to Rome’s famed Trevi fountain.
The planned fee is 2 euros and crowds will be limited to 400 people at a time. While websites and apps are still being developed, they will be the way to get tickets although some hotels may choose to sell them as well.
There are ways to get around this fee like visiting the fountain at off hours or viewing the fountain from above or nearby squares or other locations beyond the immediate tourist zone for the fountain.
