The Legendary Sahara Hotel In Vegas Reopens
The famed Sahara Hotel has reopened after having close to completed a multi-year $200 million renovation.
History of the Sahara Hotel and the Recreation
This Moroccan/African desert themed hotel featured prominently in old Vegas. It opened in October of 1952. It was the “haunting ground” for the Beatles, Elvis and Liberace. The Sahara closed in 2011. The hotel had tried to rebrand itself in 2014 as the SLS Las Vegas but it closed in 2017 in large part due to a lack of sufficient interest at that time in hotels on the northern end of the Strip. The recreation of the Sahara is impressive and the hotel is offering amenities and events that should be of interest to everyone including the LGBT community. The hotel calls their new concept “A Little MORE everything”.
Photos/Summary of New Sahara Hotel
The new hotel has three towers with names consistent with its Moroccan theme (Blanca, Marra and Alexandria). The hotel has a total of 1,613 rooms and is considered a boutique property compared to the some of the larger ones on the Strip. The Blanca offers the hotel’s entry level rooms. The Alexandria is intended to be the most upscale of the towers with design pieces by Phillipe Starck. Eventually that tower will reportedly operate as a separate hotel under the Sahara Hotel brand.
Rates
While rates vary significantly based on the date and type of room requested, this hotel in general is very affordable by Vegas Strip standards. Rates for certain dates start from a remarkable $49 a night for entry level rooms.
Conclusion
There has been increased interest in the north end of the Strip in recent years which may bode well for the success of the Sahara. We had previously reported on the opening of the huge Resorts World property. Another new hotel, the Fontainebleau Resort & Casino is anticipated to open soon though its opening has already been repeatedly delayed.
