Sedona Offers Natural Beauty, Spirituality and More
Sedona Arabella Miller was born in Missouri. Her mother made up her first name saying she thought that it sounded “pretty”. Sedona later moved to Arizona. Her husband was lobbying to be the postmaster of a sparsely populated settlement that needed a name. The town of Sedona was officially born, and the surrounding area was even more beautiful than the name itself was.
Sedona Offers Natural Beauty
Today Sedona is still known for its stunning natural beauty. Striking red and orange rock formations rise above steep valleys. Pine forests and a desert landscape somehow exist together and compliment one another. A favorite activity is hiking the many trails that surround the town. But there are also many scenic drives for those who prefer no exertion activities. Two of the must-see natural sites along the trails are Cathedral rock, a dramatic red sandstone butte that is probably the area’s most famous landmark, and Devil’s Bridge a natural sandstone arch with gorgeous views. You can also visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross. This midcentury modern piece of architecture looks like a cross rising out of the rock formation below and adds manmade beauty to the landscape. The setting sun makes the rock formations of the area glow even more beautifully. At night, the area offers excellent star gazing.
Sedona Offers Activities and Adventure
Sedona also offers many other activities that take advantage of its setting. There are hot air balloon and helicopter tours. Jeep and ATV excursions if you prefer to stay closer to the ground. Golf, wine tours, kayaking, biking, even some downhill skiing in winter. (Although if you are an avid skier you will be much more impressed with the scenery than the slopes). There are even spirituality, vortex, and UFO tours for those into that which cannot be proven at this time.
Spirituality and Wellness
The area has long been known for spirituality, wellness, and the arts. Much of this is due to the four vortices that surround the town. A vortex is a powerful energy center emanating from the earth. Many believe that Sedona’s rock formations contain powerful vortices that are entry points to spiritual enlightenment and well-being. This belief has attracted spiritual healers, Yoga enthusiasts, artists, and other creative types. It has also helped to create a large spa scene for those who just need a little pampering.
Entertainment, Arts and Restaurants
Unfortunately, there has been some strip mall and other less than attractive development around the town. But Sedona itself still offers its charms and entertainment. Several good restaurant options will keep you happy. There are also many art galleries, and other shopping options heavy on local crafts, that are a great place to buy decorative items and gifts. The town also has an international film festival, outdoor concerts, and many other arts activities throughout the year.
Sedona is 26 miles south of Flagstaff, and just over a two-hour drive north of Phoenix. It’s a great escape with attractions that allow for social distancing. Most of Red Rock State Park’s trails and the visitor center are open. Restaurants are also open but limiting capacity to 50%. Bars are currently closed unless they also serve food. Masks are required when social distancing is not possible. If Sedona sounds like the kind of place that would soothe your soul give Purple Light Vacations a call or email.
