Why Whine When You Can Wine? The Lures of the Russian River
The Russian River is an unique and wonderful resort area about 70 miles north of San Francisco. The resort area is 15 miles west of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County known for its wineries. The river received its name from the Russian America Company who settled in the area in the early 1800’s. It has a string of charming towns.
Russian River Towns
Guerneville is the largest town in the Russian River. It has long been a destination for the LGBT community. There are still a couple of gay/gay-friendly bars in the town as well as gay-friendly hotels and bed and breakfasts.
Other worthwhile towns in the area are Duncans Mills with good shopping and Forestville which is close to the river and the wineries.
What is There to Do There?
There are over 50 wineries in and around Guerneville. Some of the familiar names here are Korbel, Kendall-Jackson and Iron Horse. Many of the wineries offer free tastings. For those that prefer beer, there are many breweries and brew pubs. The restaurants in and around Guerneville do not disappoint either.
One lure of the Russian River area is the river itself. You can swim, canoe, kayak and inner tube down the river. Fishing is also popular and the fish here include Coho salmon and steel-head trout.
Other things to do here include hiking, bike riding and visiting the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve.
