NYC Airport Transit Improvements
In Purple Light Vacation’s hometown of San Diego, we are lucky to have a conveniently located airport that is quick, easy, and inexpensive to get to and from. Other cities aren’t as lucky. The New York City area has three major airports. You can take a taxi, rideshare, or express bus from any of them into Manhattan. The airport express busses to Manhattan are reasonably priced, averaging about $16, but they aren’t always very convenient. Taxis and rideshares are the most convenient but can get expensive for those trying to watch their budget. With any of these options you are at the mercy of NYC traffic, which can add a significant amount of time to your journey. Public transportation options have been limited but are about to get better at two of the area’s airports. Here is the latest NYC airport transit news.
Newark
Newark International (EWR) is the furthest from and generally has the most expensive taxi and rideshare fares into Manhattan. Taxi fare can easily be $80 before tip if there is any traffic. But Newark does have an Airtrain connection to the New Jersey Transit train that takes you into Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan. It only cost $13, is easy to use, and has a convenient schedule. It’s a great way to avoid traffic and save money if you don’t have a lot of luggage. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has recently approved $2 billion dollars to rebuild the Airtrain system. Although construction will probably be an inconvenience once the project starts, it should ultimately result in an even more convenient and faster journey.
LaGuardia
LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is the closest to Manhattan. So far ground transportation on congested roads has been the only option into the city. This is about to change as the Port authority has also approved funding to add an Airtrain connecting LaGuardia to the city’s subway system. This will greatly enhance transit options. While LaGuardia continues to be a pain as it undergoes an $8 billion dollar modernization. After all of this work is complete it may become the most convenient airport in the metro area.
The Port Authority is expected to award these contracts in 2021, with construction completed by 2024. The completion date seems a little optimistic, but we will keep our clients heading to New York updated with NYC airport transit news as it progresses.
