Why Did We Go to Iceland

We went there because one of our best friends is Icelandic. We got to see how she lives. If you have the opportunity to speak to and spend time with the locals,  do so.  It provides a unique perspective and Iceland is a wild and wooly country

When you wander around this country, you are literally witnessing geography. You are seeing new continents form. We went to a National park where a new land mass  is forming because two tectonic  plates are separating. It’s like the Pangea you heard about in high school,   or the movie  ‘Wrath of Khan  2″ when Genesis is forming. There is also land shifting and coming together in the volcanic areas in the south. You actually see glaciers breaking and forming. Some of these glaciers are larger than Puerto Rico.

The Colorful Capital City of Reykjavik

Reykjavik , the capital and largest city is so vibrant and colorful,  it is reminiscent of a child’s drawing.  It is easy to explore the city on your own. However it us helpful to use a tour company to explore the rest of the country. The tour companies on the main thoroughfare in Reykjavik really nail it.

Beyond these sites, if you are there in the summer,  you have to experience the midnight sun. Two seconds after it sets it’s  rising. Th constant daylight creates a kind of euphoria and a definite party atmosphere. We stayed out at a club until 5 and then headed to the airport without sleep and were not the least bit sorry.

With Icelandic people, There is no facade. They are very real and accommodating as well as direct. The gay scene is subdued but that is because no one there cares whom you sleep with so you will feel welcome anywhere. Just don’t ask them to play Bjork as she is respected but overexposed, and Icelanders have moved on.

Iceland is like Cuba. It us still being discovered and will not remain the same. We recommend you go sooner rather than later!
