Without further ado, here are our picks for 4 last-minute summer vacation destinations that won’t break the bank!
Asheville, North Carolina
With plenty of cabin rentals in Asheville, it’s easy to enjoy mountain views and adventure around every corner. No more than three hours from a major airport, Asheville is an affordable escape for a last-minute summer vacation. With endless opportunities for hiking, biking, and water sports, your family can experience all that nature has to offer! A simple cabin rental will provide all you need to set up camp in just about any part of town. The Downtown area features many shops and restaurants to explore, as well as some great local breweries. If you’re looking for something a little different, try Chimney Rock Park; here you’ll find rock climbing walls, horseback riding trails, and even an aerial park! There are tons of activities available year-round at Chimney Rock Park so be sure to plan ahead if your trip coincides with peak season.
Galveston Island, Texas
Galveston Island, located about 50 miles southeast of Houston, offers great beaches for both relaxing and fun-in-the-sun activities. The area has plentiful hotels, restaurants and shops to keep you busy during your stay. Galveston Island has what you need whether you’re looking for an action-packed trip or a restful one. It also boasts plenty of outdoor attractions like kayaking, biking, and hiking trails. If you’re in town on a Tuesday evening from March through October, be sure to check out Taste of Texas Nights, where local restaurants offer samples of their best dishes as well as live music performances.
Montreal, Canada
Montreal is a perfect last minute summer vacation destination if you’re looking for an eclectic mix of old and new. With free outdoor festivals, street art and amazing restaurants, there’s no shortage of things to do. A train ride will take you directly from NYC in under 3 hours. The only downside is that flights are often quite expensive because Montreal is not a major air travel hub. You can also get there via bus or car with decent driving times from Boston and New York City; both will take about 5 hours to reach Montreal by car. However, Montreal has great public transportation including trains and buses so renting a car isn’t necessary. If you decide to drive be sure to pack your passport as it’s required when crossing into Canada at some border crossings.
Tucson, Arizona
If you’re looking for a vacation filled with art, culture, food, and scenery, look no further than Tucson. Arizona’s southern-most metropolis has grown rapidly in recent years, becoming a hub for both business and arts. In addition to being home to more than 200 galleries—making it one of America’s highest concentrations of art spaces per capita—Tucson boasts close proximity to several national parks. Head out to Saguaro National Park for hiking, horseback riding or stargazing; take a drive through Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, or spend some time at Canyon de Chelly National Monument.
