First LGBT History Museum To Be Built In NYC
New York City will finally have its first LGBT history museum. The museum, which is anticipated to open in 2024, will be part of a new expansion at the New York Historical Society. The Historical Society which is located at Central Park West and 77th Street opened in 1804. It was the very first museum to open in New York City.
The LGBT History Museum will take up the entire top floor of the Historical Society. The museum expansion will encompass 75,000 SF of new space. The LGBT exhibits will be interactive and show different perspectives in a variety of exhibits and formats. The exhibits will spotlight LGBT history and culture. It will showcase LGBT+ struggles and triumphs on global, national and local levels. Richard Burns the Board Chairman of the LGBT Museum states that the museum will tell “untold stories of regular lives lived, activists’ lives, lives that were lost in queer New York and in queer America”
The Historical Society is still trying to raise money for the project, but has already received $35 million from a joint grant from the New York Department of Cultural Affairs and the NY City Council.
