What does Coddiwomple Mean?

Coddiwomple is English slang for “To travel purposefully toward an as-yet-unknown (or vague) destination”.  (If you did think that the word had sexual connotations give us a call though.  We’ll book you to the next Southern Decadence in New Orleans).

Romantic, Adventurous and Risky

We have friends and clients for whom this is the preferred journey.  Perhaps you are drawn to the ocean, but it doesn’t matter if it’s in La Jolla or the Caribbean.  Maybe you want to immerse yourself in a Parisian fantasy, but don’t have any specific sites in mind.  You just want to experience the city as it happens.  While there are certainly risks with this mode of travel, such as there being no available hotel rooms in the town you end up being in, it is romantic and adventurous.

Personally, I like the middle ground.  Know where you’re staying.  Have reservations if there is a can’t miss restaurant or ticketed event.  Then let the smaller events unfold on their own.  On an impromptu trip to San Francisco it just happened to be Chinese New Year.  Wandering out to dinner as a parade unfolded around us was more of a joy because it wasn’t on a checklist.
