Celebrating the Holidays Sunshine Style
Whether you’re in the Sunshine State, Southern California or somewhere else warm and sunny, you can still get into the holiday spirit with these warm weather holiday activities. Here’s to celebrating the holidays sunshine style.
While most people picture snow covered trees, twinkling with lights during the holidays, we do things a little differently in the warm weather states. The holidays here offer a unique advantage to enjoy warm weather activities mixed with over-the-top decorations. Where else will you see palm trees with lights and ornaments after all?
Perhaps the best way to experience the holidays, especially on a grand scale, is to be at the theme parks. Disneyland or Walt Disney World, Universal, and Sea World as well as Knott’s Merry (Berry) Farm offer a number of holiday events sure to put you in the Christmas Spirit.
Even if you’re not going to the Disney Theme Parks, you can visit any of the hotel displays for free. See the life size gingerbread house and Victorian style Christmas tree at the Grand Floridian or Grand Californian, the chocolate carousel at the BoardWalk or the intricate Christmas village trains at the Yacht and Beach Club resorts.
The St. Augustine Night of Lights takes place from mid-November to end of January in a twinkling spectacle of over 3 million lights spread throughout the historic city. This is an event you’ll want to spend the night in to fully explore and soak up not just the lights, but the extraordinary culture.
What I notice more about the holidays in warm weather states are the number of boat parades. Simply search for light up boat parade and whatever city you’re in or wish to be in and you’ll find a unique parade you can take part in.
If you’re not at one of the many theme parks that produce their own snow, you can still get your fill by visiting places such as Celebration, Florida. Each night, the town comes alive with lights, carols, and snow. They even have an ice rink!
In San Diego, Purple Light’s headquarters we have the Hotel Del Coronado which offers an ice rink overlooking the beach and ocean, their two-story lobby Christmas tree, and an impressive holiday light show.
Several other towns across the country feature falling snow and holiday activities. Simply check out the town’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau website.
The holidays is also a great time to be on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. You can leave the decorating to the cruise line as they create a festive holiday vibe even if you are wearing flip flops and drinking a pina colada.
Which do you prefer? A white Christmas or the warm weather or a land where palm trees sway?
