CDC Gives A Green Light to Vaccinated Travelers
On Friday April 2, 2021, the CDC changed its travel guidance and rules for fully vaccinated travelers. In its announcement the CDC gives a green light to vaccinated travelers to travel both domestically and internationally without quarantining. The CDC has determined that based on scientific evidence fully vaccinated travelers may travel both domestically and internationally at little risk to themselves.
Fully Vaccinated Defined
The CDC defines “fully vaccinated” as someone who has received both portions of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine or the one-part Johnson and Johnson vaccine at least two weeks before departure.
Domestic Travel Guidelines
Per the CDC fully vaccinated U.S. travelers traveling domestically no longer have to get a COVID test before or after departure. Note that this is still subject to state/local rules and restrictions such as the ones that Hawaii has in place. The CDC’s guidance is just that.
International Travel
For international travel the new CDC guidelines do not require pre-travel COVID testing. However, they are still requiring that all Americans receive a negative COVID test before returning to the U.S. from abroad. Again, please note that the CDC advisory does not trump restrictions that foreign countries have in place.
For both domestic and international travel, the CDC is recommending that fully vaccinated travelers still wear masks and follow social distancing and related rules.
