An Update on ETIAS and EES
Last summer we provided an overview of the anticipated timeline for the new electronic travel authorization system (ETIAS) and the new Electronic Exit/Entrance System (EES). HERE is a link to what we wrote at that time.
We wanted to provide you with a brief update on the status of both programs.
ETIAS
ETIAS is still slated to be implemented in the last quarter of this year. There is supposed to be an advanced announcement by the European Union and a short grace period. It is anticipated that full enforcement will start in early 2027.
EES
The electronic entry system which uses biometric data and logs as opposed to passport stamping, was gradually implemented between October of last year and last month. It is now fully operational in 29 countries. Note that Ireland and Cypress have chosen not to use the new system and are instead still stamping passports.
Note that while the intent of the new system was to speed up passenger entry/exit, the implementation has caused some serious delays at various European airports due to limited staffing, system crashes and other technical problems. There are still some major delays especially at some major European hubs like Amsterdam (AMS) Paris De Gaulle, Rome and Milan Italy and Berlin with shorter but still notable delays at Portugal airports. This is one more reason, we strongly discourage clients from having short layovers for connecting flights and encourage them to have more flexibility in their travel plans. This includes not flying in on the same day as a cruise or important event.
Travel to Europe App
Some clients and others have reported that using a new App called the “Travel to Europe” app has sped up their entry to countries using the new EES system. The app allows you to upload passport and other biometric information in advance. This new app for now is only operational in Portugal and Sweden but it hoped that additional countries will be added in the near future. For information on the app, go HERE.
