A Very Unusual and Wonderful Luxury Resort in the German Alps
Schloss Emlau is an extremely unusual but wonderful luxury resort in the German Alps. Why is it unusual? We give you a few reasons here:
It is Both Famous and Relatively Unknown
Schloss Elmau has obtained a lot of notoriety as it was the host for not one but two G7 Summits in the last ten years. Specifically, one in 2015 and one in 2022. Therefore. some of the world’s greatest leaders including Barack Obama and Andrea Merkel have stayed here. With that said, the resort is under the radar of most people.
It is Actually Two Hotels Both Focused on Health and Wellness
There are two properties at the Schloss, the Hideaway and the Retreat. However, both cater to wellness and restoration. Both have their own infinity pools, in fact each has several pools and the Schloss Emlau appears to have more pools than just about any property. It has a top notch spa with a hammam. It also offers excellent options to keep fit including a gym, separate yoga and Pilates studios as well as tennis courts and a golf course. Add to these facilities, the ability to hike and ski in the Alps and you have all the makings of a stay filled with health, wellness and luxury.
It is Kind of In The Middle of Nowhere, But That’s One of Its Attractions
The resort which is in the Krun municipality in upper Bavaria is not close to anything. The closest airport is Innsbruck, Austria and that is a 45-minute drive away. It is also assessable by train from Munich which takes between 90 minutes and two hours. You need a car to even get to the closest village. However, its isolation is one of is draws. This is a place to unwind (unless you happen to be there for a G7 Conference of course) and to enjoy the beautiful views of the Alps and surrounding countryside. The resort does provide free car rentals in case you want to go the closest village.
It Offers Varied and Excellent Dining Options
Schloss Emlau offers 10 different dining options. These include varied cuisines including Indian, Thai, Alsatian, and Pan-Mediterranean as well as French-Japanese.. While the resort is generally casual and dubs its restaurant offerings as “Casual Fine Dining”, one of the its restaurants, the French-Japanese restaurant Luce d’Oro is the proud recipient of two Michelin stars. It also includes less formal dining including an outdoor BBQ.
The resort also has several welcoming bars for you to drink to your health after a day of activity or relaxation.
Its Rooms are Spacious and Upscale
The Schloss Emlau offers varied rooms from luxurious suites to more standard rooms. All of their rooms are relatively spacious and well-appointed.
It is a Musical and Cultural Center
For years, the resort has hosted many musical and cultural events. They stage performances of top-notch musical performers including classical and jazz. They also host dance performances.
It Offers Options for Both Families and Those Seeking an Adult Experience
The resort offers programs for both kids and teenagers. These include educational activities and sporting activities including a special soccer program. The resort offers various pools and spas and separates them so that some welcome kids of all ages while others are restricted to those 16 and over.
It Has Unique Ownership and Management
The resort is currently run by a philosopher-hotelier named Dietmar Mueller-Elmau. Some of his online bios focus on him as a writer rather than a hotelier. He is known as an activist against antisemitism and his grandfather who founded the hotel had a similar vision and unique relationship with the Nazis.
