Why Iceland? The Other Green Isle Has Much to Offer
Iceland is one of those destinations that seems to be on everyone’s lips these days. Why Island? What is it about this destination that is landing on everyone’s bucket lists? It is not icy, at least not in the summer. In fact in the summer, it is very green whereas Greenland remains icy. Confused? We understand.
Land of Contrasts
Iceland is often referred to as the land of contrasts. While the weather is nicer than the name suggests (no, it is not a land covered in ice) Iceland does have enormous glaciers, one of Europe’s largest at Vatnajokull. In contrast, the island nation is built upon volcanoes, with mineral rich geothermal pools and hot springs which dot the countryside. Truly, fire in ice.
Nestled in the middle of these geological wonders is Reykjavik. Normally exotic describes colorful Caribbean towns. Yet the vivid architecture set against brilliant blue waterfalls, verdant green mountains and impressive fjords, rivals any exotic locales. Add in nightlife that’s full of character and you have a truly cosmopolitan yet natural wonder filled country.
History
Ice was a main stop for the Vikings on their way to discover the new world. Much of that Viking history remains through exhibits of Viking way of life.
Distance and Cost
From New York, Iceland is about a 6 hour flight, similar to most destinations in Europe. Better yet, WOW airlines will be flying the TF-Gay direct from San Francisco starting this June. Costs in Iceland are relatively reasonable, especially compared to metropolitan US cities.
Gay Friendly
Iceland is a LGBT friendly nation, with Pride being one of the largest events in the nation, attracting nearly 100,000 people to the event each year. Iceland is also been named number one on the Gay Happiness Index.
Options To See Iceland
Is Iceland on your list? Cruising is a great way to see all the country has to offer. If you are looking for an gay cruise, Source Events has an All Gay Iceland cruise this July. Olivia, while wait list only, has an All Women Icelandic cruise later in July.
Of course, we also arrange mainstream cruises to Iceland and are happy to put together a custom trip for you if you prefer to explore this magical place on land. Why Iceland? So many reasons.
