Traveling to Europe Soon? Updates on the ETIAS and New EES
In previous articles we have updated you on the implementation of the Electronic Travel Information and Authorization System (“ETIAS”) which the European Schlengen countries have been planning to implement now for a couple of years. Implementation of it has been repeatedly postponed. ETIAS is now slated to be implemented in the fourth quarter of 2026.
In the meantime, Europe will soon implement the EES or the European (Union) Entry/Exit System. This system uses biometric data including fingerprints and facial recognition This system will required all non-European Union nationals (with a few minor exceptions) the first time they enter the European Union after the implentation of the EES system. Thereafter, this information will be stored for a period of three years purportedly making for a more streamlined process. The system will be gradually implemented starting on October 12, 2025 and is slated to be completely in place at all European Union countries/locations by April 10, 2026.
If you are traveling to Europe after October 12, 2026, you would be well-advised to leave a bit more layover time as the EES system may cause some delays.
