Top Things to Do for A Spooky Vacation
It’s that time of year where we like to get a little spooked. Some of the oldest cities in the United States have frightfully fun things to do, some of which are year-round. Here we showcase some of these spectacular spooky haunts.
Savannah
Savannah just oozes with a Halloween feel, thanks in part to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. We are talking scenes taking place in a graveyard after all. Large oak trees and dripping Spanish moss set the scene for drama. In Savannah you can board a Ghosts and Gravestones nightly bus tour, which points out several haunted sights around the city, a few of which you get to get out and explore.
St. Augustine
The oldest city in the US is bound to have a few ghosts. Take a guided walking tour here to explore just what’s buried, quite literally, beneath the city. There are several guides to be found along the cobble stone streets. My personal favorite is the one with the Sheriff. Be sure to ask him about his stay in the Old Jail.
New Orleans
There are several tours in New Orleans dedicated to exploring the city. Tours range from highlighting and walking through the cemeteries, to tours that explore only the cemeteries. With above ground tombs in the St. Louis or Lafayette cemeteries and extraordinary tales of the dead, you’re sure to fill a chill in the hot New Orleans weather.
New York City
Did you know the big apple has catacombs? Located beneath the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, this once was a burial place. Recently opened in 2017, you can now tour these catacombs by candlelight.
San Diego
Our very own hometown has a few haunted locations. Hop on board one of the tour buses around town to visit The Whaley House, Villa Montezuma and El Campo cemetery just to name a few.
