Our Top Suggestions for Romantic Weekend Getaways from Southern California

Looking for a romantic weekend ? As many of our clients live in Southern California,we wanted to let you know about some of our favorite romantic weekend getaways relatively nearby. We in recent months focused on two of our favorites, Catalina Island and Palm Springs. However, there are many more options for a romantic weekend. Here are 5 of our other top suggestions:

Laguna Beach

Laguna is one of our favorite beach towns. It is laid back, liberal thinking,  and offers beautiful beaches that should satisfy you no matter what you are looking for. There is Shaw’s Cove for snorkelers. For surfers, there is Thalia Street beach for those learning to surf and Rockpile Beach for surfing experts seeking a challenge. There is also wonderful West Side Beach, for the LGBT community. There are also fun eateries and bars. If you are an art or theater fan, don’t miss their annual Pageant of the Masters which runs from July 1 to September 1. The theme this year is ” While the gay bar scene is virtually gone, Main Street Bar still attracts a mixed gay-friendly and fun crowd and offers varied events and entertainment.

Carmel

Carmel shown above, started as an artists’ colony. Over the years it attracted many artists like Sinclair Lewis and Ansel Adams. Long a romantic place, the original residents chose to use lanterns to light up their way at night just to make the experience more romantic. Nowadays, this is a favorite destination for honeymooners and others in love and deservedly so. It offers white sand beaches surrounded by huge cypress trees. For art enthusiasts, there are many interesting art galleries. Carmel is also is a shoppers’ paradise and has over 500 shops. There are some lovely bed and breakfast places and hotels here, but be forewarned that they are usually quite pricey. Still, keep it mind for a special occasion.

San Francisco

San Francisco, the City by the Bay, is one of our favorite getaways when we want a taste of a big city on the West Coast. We of course, like Castro Street and the unparalleled gay community, shops and nightlife. But there is so much more this city offers to all. One of the most international cities, we love the diversity here both in terms of people’s background and interests. There are avid sports fans here that mix with artistic and bohemian types.  From creative and first-rate dining to theater and the arts, it is truly a sophisticated city. Nonetheless, entertainment here does not have to be highbrow. The perennial “Beach Blanket Babylon” remains one of our favorites.

Las Vegas

While some think of Vegas as “Sin City” and a place only to go with friends to party, we find Vegas a great destination for a fun but romantic weekend getaway. Vegas offers a large selection of hotel rooms on and off the strip that are larger than in most other cities. Many Vegas hotel rooms tempt you and your partner to stay in them such as soaking tubs, minibars,  large comfortable beds and other amenities. Vegas has an abundance of excellent spas,  and what is more romantic than a couples’ massage? The shows in Vegas are also fun to watch with a significant other. Cirque du Soleil’s “Zumanity” show alone is a “Kama Sutra” experience.

San Diego

While we are biased since San Diego is our home base, we think that there is something very romantic about San Diego. From the rocky and sometime naughty Black’s Beach in nearby La Jolla, to the lush gardens and grounds of Balboa Park, there is much to experience here. Our zoo with its pandas and koalas is world famous, but you can hunt for other “bears” in our Hillcrest bars. For those who love theater, our La Jolla Playhouse and Old Globe Theaters stage shows headed for Broadway.  While our restaurant scene was once pathetic, it has become far better in recent years. San Diego can be a fun romantic weekend getaway for those in other places in Southern California. For San Diego residents, a “staycation” may allow you the time to really explore this wonderful city.
