Sublimely Spooky Sites by Tonya Denmark
There are some sublimely spooky sites where you can get scared not only at Halloween, but all year round
Halloween brings about its fair share of scary and not-so-scary events. Think of the long running Universal Studios Halloween Horror nights in LA and Orlando as well as Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween party in Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Not to mention, oodles of haunted houses, mazes and more at theme parks and pop ups around the country. But what if you’re looking to get spooked beyond Halloween. We found these creepy locations that operate year-round.
Sedlec Bone Church – Prague
This eerie occult-like church displays the remains of over 40000 individuals. Located in Kutna Hora, not far from Prague. The church became home to these thousands of burials in the mid-twelfth century, thanks to the resident abbot. On a mission to Jerusalem, the abbot brought back some of the holy soil and sprinkled it in the monastery. Because it was now considered consecrated grounds, everyone wanted to be buried here. Around 1870, a woodcarver decided to arrange the bones in a decorative style, giving this church an even paranormal appearance. For pictures, click here.
New Orleans – Ghost Tours
New Orleans has a long history with famed voodoo, ghosts, witches and vampires, making it a perfect spooky city. We recommend taking one of the many ghost tours offered throughout The Big Easy. From touring centuries old cemeteries to legendary vampire tales, New Orleans is rife with historical haunts.
San Diego Whaley House
Billed as America’s Most Haunted House, the Whaley House in San Diego has quite a color past. Now a museum with guided tours, the Whaley House tour guides will enthrall you with tales of the Whaley family spirits.
Moundsville West Virginia Penitentiary
Penitentiary’s are known for their unnerving secrets. Simply walking into an old jail is enough to raise the hairs on the back of our necks. In the late 1800’s, every West Virginia execution took place here along with countless murders and tortures. Special tours take place in October designed to scare, but the building is open year-round. Alternatively, Alcatraz Island also makes for an intimidating experience.
Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast
Yes, the home of the famed murderess Lizze Borden is now a B&B and Museum. Imagine sleeping near the murder site, or even in one of the rooms where John or Abby Borden’s bodies were found.
Whether you’re looking for a chilling stay or a ghostly tour, these sites, among many others operate year-round so that you can keep the Halloween spirit alive… or dead as the case may be.
