Stranded at the Airport?
Always have your airline’s app and/or toll-free numbers on your phone. Get in line at the counter, but try to take care of your rebooking with your phone. It’s often much faster. Some airlines also have “secret” help lines which they only operate in the event of major delays (such as a blizzard). You can check your airline’s website to find these.
More Tips
There are also apps which list all flights by all airlines out of an airport. While airlines aren’t required to place you on a competitor, they sometimes will if you are polite and persistent. Knowing what other flights are available gives you knowledge to help a gate agent help you. Note that if there is a flight on one of your airline’s partners, it is more likely that you can be placed on one of these if seats are available.
Finally, to avoid delays try to fly earlier in the day. Delays tend to build up as the day progresses and there will be fewer options to get you to your destination at 6:00 pm than at 8:00 am. Also keep in mind that it is very difficult for an airline to switch you to another flight if you have checked baggage. If you only have a carry on, it makes your odds of being accommodated much better. So while everyone can get stranded at the airport. Careful planning and being “in the know” can minimize the likelihood and pain.
