“Somewhere That’s Green”: Inviting Eco-Friendly Destinations
Ecotourism is an important part of travel these days. There are many well known destinations for ecotourists including the Galapagos and Machu Picchu. Here we list some other lesser known ecotourist destinations most of which are “green” in every sense of the word:
Azores Islands
This group of nine volcanic islands that form an archipelago is both beautiful and remarkable for its efforts to protect the environment and wildlife. It has an isolated autonomous energy system. It is also very green in color. Its main island Sao Miguel is nicknamed the “Green Island”. Sao Miguel’s parks, tobacco fields, and forests offer a variety of green shades.
Freiburg, Germany
This vibrant University city in the Black Forest area of Germany was heavily bombed during World War II. It rebuilt itself virtually from scratch using ecologically friendly methods. Among other steps they took in rebuilding the city is by creating neighborhoods where residents could access all of their daily needs on foot or by bicycle. You will see solar panels throughout the city.
Ljubljana, Slovenia
In the past 10 years, this charming and largest city in Slovenia has become a model for environmental sustainability in Europe. It won the title of “European Green Capital in 2016”. It was also the first capital on Europe to take part in the ‘zero waste’ program. Parks and other public green areas constitute a third of the city.
Uruguay
Uruguay is notable for many green reasons. It was the first country to fully legalize marijuana. Additionally, it offers many attractive parks and green areas as well as some legendary beaches. More importantly, this South American country has also taken heroic steps during the past several years to help the environment. For example, it has learned how to do without oil. Over 97% of its electricity comes from wind, water and agricultural waste.
Vancouver
Vancouver is one of our favorite North American cities. Its residents love the outdoors and their Stanley Park is green and inviting. They have for a long time been a city with a keen eye on the environment. Walking and cycling are the most popular ways to get around the city and they also offers electric buses and hybrid taxis. They also hosted the first Greenpeace way back in 1971.
