Our Favorite Sandy Beaches
While there are many beautiful sandy beaches in the World, we have our favorites. Here are just a few of them:
Bondi Beach, Australia
Located just outside of cosmopolitan Sydney, Bondi Beach is the perfect place to meet hot Australians like Sandy (or her brother) and to see a little Aussie Bum. It is popular and fun.
Blue Beach (La Chiva) Vieques, Puerto Rico
Blue Beach is one of the Caribbean’s top beaches. It is not easy to access as you must drive through turnouts on bumpy unpaved roads. Once you get there however, you are met by a long thin piece of perfect sand and clear blue water that rivals any blue water in the Caribbean.
Trunk Bay, St John
Trunk Bay is located in the Virgin Islands’ National Park donated by the Rockefellers in the 1950’s. St John is quiet and beautiful though it is a short ferry ride from the bustle of Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas. Trunk Bay offers great snorkeling opportunities such as an underwater trail, and calm water. It is no wonder that the beach is a favorite photographers’ subject. The fact that the U.S. Virgin Island are among the most gay-friendly Caribbean islands only adds to our appreciation of Trunk Bay. The lovely Caneel Bay Resort is a great place to stay on the Island.
Parrot Cay, Turks and Caicos
Parrot Cay is a favored destination of A-listers and celebrities. It is exclusive, private and isolated island. The only way to get there is a 45-minute ferry ride from Providenciales, the small capital of Turks and Caicos. There is only one luxury resort (COMO Parrot Bay) here. The beach is superb.
Orient Bay Beach, St Maarten
This is one of the best beaches to go if you are looking for a fun party atmosphere. There is a clothing optional section including Club Orient, the Island’s only nudist resort. The entire beach is full of bars and beach clubs.
Matira Beach, Bora Bora
Matira is likely Tahiti’s most famous beach, and deservedly so. This public beach offers some of the world’s most powdery-white sand overlooking an emerald lagoon surrounded by palm trees. Matira Beach is partly responsible for the Island being known as the “Romantic Island”.
El Nido, Palawan Philippines
While not as well known as Boracay Island, Palawan and specifically El Nido, offers some of the most attractive white sand beaches in all of Asia. The water here also is clearer and bluer than that in the Caribbean.
Dreamland Beach, Bali
This formerly hidden spot remains a top surfer destination due to its great shore breaks. The friendly and spiritual vibe of Bali adds to the beauty and sense of peace.
Herring Cove Beach, Provincetown, MA
We love P-town. So its top beach, Herring Cove, has to be on our list; even though it is not the most spectacular beach in its own right. Nonetheless, the friendly beach is surrounded by dunes and part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. It’s our favorite place on the Cape to catch some rays. It attracts a mixed crowd of gay men, lesbians and straights. It’s a short walk from a parking lot. Or, bike to the fence and hike across the marsh so you don’t have to feel as guilty about all the drinks and food you’ll enjoy later in town.
Black’s Beach, San Diego
Of course we are a little biased. However Black’s Beach, our local beach, deserves to be in our top 10. It is a pretty, clothing optional beach that is a quick drive north of the central city in picturesque La Jolla. The long and somewhat treacherous path (depending on erosion conditions) down the cliffs to the beach, and the hang-gliders sailing by overhead add to the sense of adventure. You can arrange to take a tandem ride at the Torrey Pines Gliderport if you’re feeling especially adventurous.
