What to Do Down Under-Must See Gay Travel in Australia
Last month we let you know all about Mardi Gras in Sydney and its history of gay pride parades. Mardi Gras isn’t the only reason to go Down Under. There is so much worthwhile gay travel in Australia. Here’s a few more reasons to say G’day Mate!
Where to go
Australia is a large country, with most of the big cities on the Eastern coast. Australia as a country is often toted as one of the gay friendliest in the world. Plus all the attractive men and women, with cute accents, doesn’t hurt either.
Northern Territory and Queensland
In Queensland, the northeast province, you’ll find the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Brisbane is known for its culture and art scene mixed in with eclectic restaurants and riverside cafés. And even though Brisbane boast high quality contemporary art museums, it’s still funky and laid back. Combine a day of kayaking, walking tours and delicious dining with side trips to Koala and Kangaroo sanctuaries.
The Great Barrier Reef is at the northernmost area of Queensland. Go to the largest reef in the world to dive or snorkel in the GBR, or visit in June when the humpbacks migrate through the aquamarine waters.
Trek to the Northern Territory to find Alice Springs, your base camp to visit Uluru the big red rock. Discover aboriginal art and abundant Australian wildlife.
New South Wales
New South Wales is home to the countries biggest city Sydney. Along with the list of iconic sites such as the Opera House, you’ll find enticing events, beautiful beaches, and world class dining. All of this located in one of the World’s most beautiful harbors.
Australian Outback
If you’re really up for an adventure, hit the road for the Broken Hill in the Australian Outback for the Broken Heel Festival, home of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
Melbourne and Southern Australia
The State of Victoria brings another vibrant and historical city, Melbourne. It is the most English of Australia’s big cities. Brunswick Street is the center of the vibrant dining and club scene. Here, you can take up the Great Ocean Road south to the Southern Ocean. Melbourne is surrounded by rugged coastlines and beaches to explore.
While Melbourne and Sydney cater to city lovers, nature lovers will want to trek to Southern Australia, home to Adelaide and Kangaroo Island. Swim with dolphins and sea lions, or jump with the Kangaroos on the intriguing island.
