The Lure of the Far East-A Study of Contrasts
Looking for a trip that is both enjoyable and culturally expanding? Then consider the undeniable lure of the far east. Whether you are considering a visit to China, Japan, Vietnam or Cambodia, each offers something different and equally worthwhile.
Here are some general impressions on what makes each country special and worth a visit and then some packages currently available to explore these fascinating destinations:
Japan: The attention the Japanese pay to detail, quality and beauty is legendary. It shows in the ancient art of Origami and the scrupulous attention to the appearance and taste of their food. Japan blends western and eastern elements in a unique way. It also mixes ancient rituals like those of the geishas with modern architecture and consumerism. A trip to Japan should of course include Tokyo, a modern business city. It should include a trip to Kyoto, a window into the religion and history of Japan. Osaka, which started as the home to Japan’s most beautiful royal palace, now is an international business center known for among other things its’ excellent restaurants and the only Universal Studios outside of the U.S. Also, don’t miss the opportunity to view the majesty of Mount Fuji.
China: China is known for its’ spectacular natural scenery and historical sites. The view of the mountains coming off from the Great Wall is stunning. Beijing with its Forbidden City and Tienanmen Square is a must see. So is Xi’an with its famous Terracotta Warriors. Shanghai is an almost futuristic city that at times makes American cities seem a bit behind the times. Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan and alluring city with excellent shopping, culture and nightlife. Chinese food is one of the most lauded cuisines in the World. China’s restaurants and markets showcase the culinary melting pot that is China.
Vietnam: Vietnam surprises most people who visit it. It is amazingly beautiful with impressive beaches including the crescent shaped Nha Trang. It offers important historic sites such an the ruins of the palaces of Hoi Ann. Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon) is full of bustle, history and people on mopeds. The Vietnamese are perhaps a bit surprisingly friendly and welcoming to Americans. The food is excellent and inexpensive. The French influence in this country is unmistakable.
Cambodia: For some, the lure of the Far East is a slower pace and a very authentic southeast Asian experience. If that is what you are looking for, head to Cambodia. Its people are friendly. Siem Reap and its crown jewel, the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat, are a can’t miss. The city of Phnom Penh gets you back to a bustling city with historical sites both beautiful (the splendor of its Royal Palace) and enlightening (learning about the genocide of Khmer Rouge).
