Greece is the Word
Birthplace of democracy, stunning beaches, world class museums and Ouzo; what’s not to love about Greece? Actually, for me, it’s the Ouzo. I’m not a fan of black licorice, so Greece’s most famous liquor isn’t my favorite. But, fortunately they also make Metaxa, a brandy-like aperitif. So, why not try both and see which you prefer? In addition to the alcohol, the food is amazing. Enjoy a simply prepared seafood lunch that was just pulled from the Aegean, of grab a gyro and explore the maze of streets in a quiet island village. Greece is the word!
Greece is one of the most popular destinations for Mediterranean cruises, and for travelers exploring by land. But, despite the crowds it’s worth a visit, whether it’s your first time or your tenth. Greece is a diverse country consisting of the mainland, which includes the bustling capital of Athens, and about 6,000 islands. Each island has its own character, so you can always find one that suits your mood. Below are a few of our favorite destinations, and ones that are popular with the cruise lines.
Although many only go to Greece to enjoy the islands, if it’s your first time in Greece, consider spending a few days in Athens. This enormous, dusty, and hot (in summer) metropolis can be overwhelming. But, it offers a look at a real city that isn’t dependent on tourism. It also offers some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, such as the Parthenon sitting atop the Acropolis. This hilltop temple was built in 447 BC and is one of the most famous and influential pieces of architecture in the World. The Plaka neighborhood is adjacent to the Acropolis and offers some of the best dining, shopping, and strolling in the City. Athens suffered during the country’s recent financial crisis. But, strikes and protests now rarely disrupt a traveler. Plus, prices and crowds are still slightly less than they were at their peak.
Mykonos, although wildly popular, is still one of our favorite islands. It has a little bit of everything, including some of the best gay nightlife in Greece. It’s capital, Mykonos Town, was specifically designed to confuse pirates. With its whitewashed buildings and blue roofs, it’s a delightful place to get lost and wander around. Paradise, Super Paradise, and Elia beaches offer varying levels of the party scene; and gayness. But, all can be fun. Nightlife ranges from large dance clubs and beach parties, to intimate piano bars with talent imported from around the world. If all of this is too much, one of the most popular activities on the island is to just have dinner, or a drink, and watch the sunset over the sea with the island’s famous windmills nearby.
Santorini is one of the most popular islands on cruise itineraries. While we’re not overly impressed with the sites or shopping within the main towns of Fira and Oia, the view of them as you approach the island is truly spectacular. The center of the island collapsed in the 16th century BC, leaving dramatic cliffs which plunge into the now ocean filled crater below. Many believe that this is the origin of the story of the lost city of Atlantis. Now the whitewashed buildings of the towns line these cliffs and loom above you as you approach. For many this is the quintessentially “Greek” postcard view. There are also dramatic paths you can hike between the towns. Or, hike up the cone of the new volcanic peak that is rising out of the water of the caldera.
Naxos isn’t undiscovered, but it’s not on as many people’s radar as the previous spots mentioned. Like Athens, it’s a chance to see a part of Greece that hasn’t been completely overrun by tourism. But, at a much smaller scale and laid-back pace. Hora (Naxos Town) is the main town and offers excellent dining and shopping options. But, there are small towns, towers and ruins to explore all over the island. Much of Greece is semi-arid and windswept, so the landscape can be sparse. Naxos is one of the lushest of the Greek islands and offers more agriculture and greenery than other parts of the country, which is a nice change of pace.
