Croatian Romance
Sapphire Adriatic waters, forest covered mountains and walled medieval cities with red tile roofs, Croatia’s beauty is intoxicating. It is not surprising that many have a Croatian romance. Located in Southeastern Europe, Croatia has long been a crossroads of cultures and commerce. Croats, Greeks, Romans, Franks, Ottomans and Austrians have all left their mark on the region. While this has unfortunately led to a tumultuous history, today it has resulted in a meld of cuisines, architecture and culture that charms those who visit. Most famous for its stunning Dalmatian coast, the inland region also offers natural beauty and cities worth exploring that are a little more off the beaten path.
Zagreb
Zagreb is the country’s capital and largest city. Its Upper town offers cobblestone streets, stone buildings with tile roofs, and the spires of historic churches. Lowertown offers a collage of 18th and 19th century buildings in the secessionist, neo-baroque, and art deco styles. Between the Upper and Lower Towns lies a charming square that is home to a bustling fruit and vegetable market. As Croatia was formally a part of communist Yugoslavia, severe concrete buildings and walls mar parts of the city. But today many are enlivened with murals to soften their edge. The city has a young and vibrant population that loves to linger at the city’s many restaurants and cafes. It’s a city that has learned how to enjoy life and newfound freedom.
Zadar and Split
Zadar and Split are two coastal cities that offer many opportunities to the traveler. Both offer Roman ruins, although Zadar’s are better, and medieval alleys and architecture to explore. Zadar also offers fortified walls, Venetian gates, several delightful churches, and a modern “sea organ” that plays music as the waves hit it. In addition to its fortress, palace and other impressive architecture, Split also has some very good beaches if you need a chance to decompress.
In addition to Zadar and Split, Croatia’s Adriatic Coast offers many other towns and beaches of note. But, none of them capture one’s imagination like the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dubrovnik.
Dubrovnik
It’s charming and romantic Old Town is surrounded by 13th to 16th century walls. It’s possible to climb to the top of these and walk around the city admiring the red tile roofs and Adriatic views. Ruled and influenced by the Romans, Byzantine Empire, Venetians, Austrians, and more; Dubrovnik offers narrow alleys and grand streets, palaces, churches and bell towers all packed into a compact area. In addition to the architecture, these cultures have also influenced the city’s cuisine. Try the amazing seafood, but the city also offers surprisingly good pizza. Game of Thrones fans will recognize many of Dubrovnik’s streets and buildings as the city is a main filming site for the series. You can take a tour of the major shooting locations used. This beautiful little city more than lives up to its name of “The Pearl of the Adriatic”.
The Croatian Mountains/Inland
If you enjoy nature more than the man-made, Croatia will not disappoint. It’s rugged coasts and beaches offer opportunities for hiking and relaxation. Just remember that most Croatian beaches are of pebbles, instead of sand, so bring a mat to lay out on. If you’re spending time in the mountainous inland, consider a visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park. This forested national park offers sixteen lakes that are connected by beautiful waterfalls. Trails wind around these and extend into a canyon. If you want a less strenuous adventure the lakes also offer a boat ride.
