Airline Changes and Developments You Should Know
If you will be flying in 2025, here are some airline changes and developments you should be aware 0f to be in the know. 2024 witnessed record flight activity together with many challenges from flight cancellations to IT outages. The airlines and the Department of Transportation (“DOT”) have improvements and developments in store on various fronts. Here are just a few things airline changes of note:
It Will be Easier to Get a Refund
One of the Biden administration’s achievements was the implementation of new DOT rules that make it easier for passengers to obtain a refund in the event of flight cancellations or significant delays. The intent of these rules is to streamline the refund process and not require passengers to have to demand a refund in these circumstances. The new rules which went into effect in October of last year, also make it easier for passengers to obtain compensation for lost or delayed luggage. You can check out the new regulations HERE.
Real ID Regulation to Go Into Effect This Year
After a couple of postponements, the Real ID requirements are set to go into effect on May 7m 2025. What do they mean for you? If you use your state driver’s license as your ID to fly domestically in the U.S. starting May 7th that driver’s license will need to satisfy the federal Real ID Act requirements. Your driver’s license does not need to be updated if you use a passport or passport ID card to board flights.
Airlines Increasing Premium Service Options
Many airlines will be expanding passenger options for premium services of one kind or another. An example of this is Southwest Airlines. Starting in late 2025, Southwest for the first time will be offering assigned seats (for flights departing in 2026 and thereafter). They also reportedly will offer premium seats with extra leg room.
Airline Changes Include New Routes
As is true every year, airlines are adding to and eliminating route options. One of these changes we are most pleased about is an additional international nonstop flight option in our hometown of San Diego. Starting on May 8th, KLM will be offering nonstop flights from San Diego to Amsterdam 3 times per week.
